Being visible online used to mean one thing for most businesses: ranking on Google.
That’s changing.
Potential customers can now discover businesses through traditional Google results, Google Maps, AI Overviews, AI Mode and conversational AI tools.
But that doesn’t mean you need an entirely separate website strategy for AI.
Google’s current guidance says that the same fundamental SEO practices continue to apply to its generative AI search features and that there are no special technical requirements or special AI schema required to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
So what should a local business actually concentrate on?
1. Make it obvious what you do and where you do it
Don’t make search engines—or customers—work it out.
- Your website should clearly explain:
- What your business does
- The services you provide
- Where you’re based
- The areas you serve
- How someone can contact you
If you’re a business based in Prince Edward County but also serve Belleville and Kingston, for example, that information should be clearly and naturally represented in your website content.
2. Create genuinely useful content
Service pages tell people what you sell.
Helpful articles demonstrate what you know.
Think about the questions customers regularly ask before contacting you.
A web designer might answer:
How much does a website cost?
Do I need someone to maintain my WordPress website?
A restaurant might answer questions about reservations, dietary requirements or large groups.
A contractor could explain how long a particular project takes or what customers should consider before requesting a quote.
Google’s current AI-search guidance emphasizes valuable, unique, non-commodity content, rather than producing pages simply because particular phrases receive searches.
3. Look after your Google Business Profile
For a local business, your website isn’t your only source of information.
Your Google Business Profile should contain accurate business information, categories, contact details and other applicable information.
Google specifically recommends claiming and maintaining a Business Profile to establish local business information across Search and Maps.
4. Build your local reputation
Reviews aren’t just stars beside your business name.
They provide useful evidence about people’s real experiences with your business.
Encourage genuine customers to leave honest reviews and respond professionally when appropriate.
Mentions of your business on relevant local websites, organizations and directories can also help establish the connection between your company, services and location.
5. Make individual pages easy to understand
Don’t try to make one page rank for everything.
A web design company, for example, might have separate pages covering:
Web Design
SEO
Website Hosting
Website Maintenance
Website Management
Each page can thoroughly explain that particular service and answer the questions someone considering it is likely to have.
That gives traditional search engines and AI systems clearer, more focused information to work with.
6. Use structured data correctly
Schema markup provides structured information that can help search engines understand a page and the entities associated with it.
Depending on the page, appropriate structured data might identify your organization, local business, article, service or breadcrumb structure.
But schema isn’t a shortcut to AI rankings.
Google explicitly says there’s no special Schema.org markup required for its AI features and recommends making sure structured data accurately matches the visible content of the page.
7. Don’t forget images
Good original images can provide additional context about your business, services, location and work.
Use descriptive filenames where appropriate and write ALT text that genuinely describes an image rather than filling every ALT attribute with the same SEO keyword.
Google’s latest generative-AI guidance specifically includes images and other multimedia among the content types site owners should consider.
8. Keep the website current
An abandoned website can contain old prices, outdated services, broken functionality and information that no longer accurately represents the business.
Regularly review important pages and update them when something changes.
That benefits your customers first—and also means search and AI systems have better information available when they crawl your website.
Can you guarantee my business will appear in AI answers?
No.
Nobody can legitimately guarantee that ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini or another AI system will mention a particular business for a particular question.
Google itself states that meeting its requirements and best practices doesn’t guarantee that content will be crawled, indexed or served.
What you can do is make your business easier to understand and your website a genuinely useful source of information.
Start with your customers, not the algorithm
The best approach to AI search is surprisingly familiar.
Build a technically sound website. Clearly explain what you do. Demonstrate local relevance. Answer genuine customer questions. Publish useful original information. Keep your business details consistent and your website current.
That’s a much stronger long-term strategy than trying to discover a trick for “ranking in AI.”
